Uncovering the Outflow Driven by the Brown Dwarf LS - RCrA 1 : H α as a Tracer of Outflow Activity in Brown Dwarfs

چکیده
It is now apparent that classical T Tauri-like outflows commonly accompany the formation of young brown dwarfs. To date two optical outflows have been discovered and results presented in this paper increase this number to three. Using spectro-astrometry the origin of the LS-RCrA 1 forbidden emission lines in a blue-shifted outflow is confirmed. The non-detection of the red-shifted component of the outflow in forbidden lines, along with evidence for some separation between low and high velocity outflow components, do not support the hypothesis that LS-RCrA 1 has an edge-on accretion disk. The key result of this analysis is the discovery of an outflow component to the Hα line. The Hα line profile has blue and red-shifted features in the wings which spectro-astrometry reveals to also originate in the outflow. The discovery that Hα emission in BDs can have a significant contribution from an outflow suggests the use of Hα line widths as a proxy of mass accretion in BDs is not clear-cut. This method assumes that any contribution to the Hα line flux from a possible outflow is negligible. Finally the fact that the Hα line traces both lobes of the outflow while only the blue-shifted lobe is seen in forbidden emission points to the presence of a dust hole in the accretion disk of LS-RCrA 1. This is commonly seen in CTTSs and is assumed to signal the onset of planet formation. Variable accretion and outflow in young brown dwarfs
We report on the first dedicated monitoring campaign of spectroscopic variability in young brown dwarfs. High-resolution optical spectra of six targets in nearby star-forming regions were obtained over 11 nights between 2005 JanuaryMarch on the Magellan 6.5m telescope. We find significant variability in Hα and a number of other emission lines related to accretion and outflow processes on a vari...
متن کاملChapter 1 Searching for Brown Dwarf Outflows
As outflow activity in low mass protostars is strongly connected to accretion it is reasonable to expect accreting brown dwarfs to also be driving outflows. In the last three years we have searched for brown dwarf outflows using high quality optical spectra obtained with UVES on the VLT and the technique of spectro-astrometry. To date five brown dwarf outflows have been discovered. Here the met...
متن کاملFirst Direct Simulation of Brown Dwarf Formation in a Compact Cloud Core
Brown dwarf formation and star formation efficiency are studied using a nested grid simulation that covers five orders of magnitude in spatial scale (10– 0.1AU). Starting with a rotating magnetized compact cloud with a mass of 0.22M⊙, we follow the cloud evolution until the end of main accretion phase. Outflow of ∼ 5 km s emerges ∼ 100 yr before the protostar formation and does not disappear un...
متن کامل0 Detection of H α Emission in a Methane ( T - type ) Brown Dwarf
We report the detection of Hα emission in the T dwarf (methane brown dwarf) 2MASSW J1237392+652615 over three days using the Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. The measured line flux, log(LHα/Lbol) = −4.3, is roughly consistent with early M dwarf activity levels and inconsistent with decreasing activity trends in late M and L dwarfs. Similar emission is not seen in two other T dwarfs. We...
متن کاملHerbig-Haro Objects - Tracers of the Formation of Low-mass Stars and Sub-stellar Objects
Herbig-Haro objects (HHOs) are caused by outflows from young objects. Since the outflow relies on mass accretion from a circumstellar disk, it indicates ongoing growth. Recent results of infrared observations yielded evidence for disks around brown dwarfs. This suggests that at least a certain fraction of brown dwarfs forms like stars. Thus, young sub-stellar objects might cause HHOs as well. W...
